Bar Foundations

Duration: 2 hours

Difficulty: Beginner to Advanced

Prerequisites: 1 pull-up, 1 straight leg lift and be working on a clean straight two-hand straddle inversion

Description: Starting with the alignment of a basic two-hand hang, the workshop progresses to mounting techniques, sitting and standing. This workshop is theory heavy and perfect for students of all levels, even coaches can gain a unique perspective on this approach to bar work. Advanced students will progress to small dynamic movements and which will give them the foundations for larger dynamic technique.

LYRA HANGS

Duration: 1.5 hours

Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced

Prerequisites: basic hoop knowledge, 2 pull-ups, 5 leg lifts, and a clean straight 2-arm straddle inversion.

Description: In this workshop, the students will explore different “hanging” positions, starting with the alignment of a basic 2-hand hang and progressing to hangs by knees, elbows, hips and armpits. The participants will learn correct positioning to avoid injury and increase purchase on the apparatus. Each student will have the opportunity to explore a variety of poses and shapes in the different hanging positions. The workshop will introduce neck, toe and heel hangs with single toe and single heel drills for advanced students.

LYRA ROLLS

Duration: 2 hours

Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced

Prerequisites: basic hoop knowledge, 3-5 pull-ups, 5 leg lifts, a clean straight 2-arm straddle inversion, and strong knee and hip hangs. Elbow guards recommended.

Description: Students in this workshop will explore the many ways to roll around the lyra. Beginning with basic knee “monkey rolls”, the workshop will progress to other types of rolling using knees, hands, hips and more (including Russian rolls and mill circles). Students will be led on experimentation and investigation into elbow rolls, a highlight of this workshop. Advanced students will learn progressions for different entries and exits to and from the different rolling positions.

LYRA BEATS AND RELEASES

Duration: 2 hours

Difficulty: Intermediate/Advanced

Prerequisites: basic hoop knowledge, 3-5 pull-ups, 5 leg lifts and a clean straight 2-arm straddle inversion. Strong knee, hands and hip hangs.

Description: Participants in this workshop will have the chance to explore the power of beats and the many ways to utilize this power. The focus is on beats from knees and hands, with special attention to different techniques for beating from hands (pike, force out and straight). Students already familiar with basic beating techniques will be introduced to side and circular beats. Students will be exposed to basic release moves such as the zipper pops/clips and the tombé

INTRODUCTION TO  SWINGING LYRA

Duration: 2 hours

Difficulty: Advanced

Prerequisites: Advanced lyra students only with excellent aerial awareness, 5-8 pull-ups, 8 leg lifts, and a clean straight 2-arm straddle inversion, comfortable with beats from hands and knees.

Description: This workshop focusses on the fundamentals of swinging on the aerial lyra. Using technique derived from swinging trapeze and dance trapeze, students will become familiar with the basic timings of a swing. The object of this workshop is for each student to comprehend the “weightless” moments at the peaks of the swing and to be exposed to different ways to generate swing height.

AERIAL STRAPS FUNDAMENTALS AND STRENGTH

Duration: 1.5 hours

Difficulty: Intermediate

Prerequisites: intermediate aerial awareness, 2 pull-ups, 5 leg lifts, and a clean straight 2-arm straddle inversion. Wrist guards recommended.

Description: This workshop centers around basic strength drills for straps artists. The exercises and progressions are derived from the teachings of Victor Formine.

LEG FLEXIBILITY

Duration: 1 hour

Difficulty: Beginning to Advanced

Prerequisites: General circus and flexibility practice.

Description: Students in this workshop will be exposed to passive and active techniques to aide splits, straddles, middle pancakes, and pike flexibility. Using techniques from dance and rhythmic gymnastics, this workshop will give the participants a thorough workout and stretch. Partner stretching and over-splits exercises will be shared with advanced students.
